Match report: Town 3 - 2 Crewe

Craney’s excellent finish, which had manager Stan Ternent and coaches Ronnie Jepson and Mick Docherty showing their delight, should have flattened Crewe’s hopes but within two minutes they were back in the hunt – Donaldson looking suspiciously offside from James Bailey’s through ball before he stumbled beyond a challenge from Glennon to prod the ball home.

Parker, Dickinson and Roberts all tried their luck at the start of the second half, but the visitors still looked threatening on the break and they got the benefit of what appeared another generous offside decision on 59 minutes for Donaldson to go through and finish off Moore’s angled pass.

Butler and the hard-grafting Nathan Clarke protested long and hard and there was frustration in the stands, too, as two objects were thrown towards assistants Alf Greenwood and Ryan Johnson (one from the Riverside lower tier and one from the Antich), incidents which will be reported by referee Darren Drysdale.

Worthington collected his fifth booking of the season – he’s banned against Port Vale on Saturday – as he tried to get Town back into rhythm, and Ternent rang the changes by introducing Steve Jones, Phil Jevons and Jim Goodwin in a bid to prise only a second home league win of the campaign.
