Match report: Southend United 0 - 1 Huddersfield Town

Smithies produced a fine tip-over as Barrett headed goalwards from a 68th-minute free-kick by on-loan Fulham midfielder Robert Milsom.

But the best was yet to come.

Town’s fans were fearing the worst when Williams sent Betsy sprawling and Sussex referee David Phillips pointed to the spot.

But Smithies was equal to Walker’s strike, and the way he was mobbed by his joyous teammates showed just how much winning this game meant.

There was still time for one more save, Smithies pushing Harding’s 86th-minute free-kick over, but Southend had little else to offer.
