Match report: Huddersfield Town 2 - 0 Hereford
Dec 22 2008 By Doug Thomson
Town were playing some fluent football, and getting a taste for shots on goal, but Roberts (three times), Williams and Clarke were all narrowly off target or denied by Samson.
Hereford had the odd upfield foray, with Richard Rose heading over before the tricky Ainsworth shot wide from a good position on the right side of the box, and enjoyed a purple patch early in the second half.
Williams had a shot held, Ainsworth drove over, Guinan flicked a shot from Kris Taylor’s cross onto the roof of the net before, in the 57th minute, Clarke came agonisingly close to an own goal as he slid onto Ainsworth’s centre.
Guinan was in a great position but unable to connect properly with Taylor’s cross before teenage Town keeper Alex Smithies, making a third straight start, denied Ainsworth then Ben Smith.
Boss Clark, clearly concerned at Hereford’s dominance, made changes both in personnel and formation, bringing on Phil Jevons (58 minutes) and Cadamarteri (65) and going 4-4-2 rather than five at the back.
And it was to pay dividends, although only after Hereford had a penalty appeal turned down when Williams went down under Andy Butler’s challenge.
