Match report: Huddersfield Town 2 - 0 Scunthorpe United

GARY ROBERTS sealed a sweet Town victory with the very last kick of a dramatic match – but it was Scunthorpe old boy Jim Goodwin who got the all-important breakthrough goal.

Town had been pressing for 65 minutes when Goodwin, who had three years at Glanford Park before a summer switch, finished off a Roberts corner, his team’s seventh of the game, with a diving header into goalkeeper Joe Murphy’s right-hand corner.

Scunthorpe, who had always looked threatening when they managed to get the ball into the final third, refused to give up in their search for an equaliser.

And Town fans in a 15,228 crowd (1,641 visitors) had to endure some nervous moments before, five minutes into stoppage time and with keeper Murphy upfield to bolster the bid for an equaliser, top scorer Roberts rolled his eighth goal of the season into an empty net after a great break by Danny Cadamarteri.

Both Cadamarteri and Phil Jevons were given their first starts under Lee Clark after being among the few to impress for Town in the dismal 3-0 Boxing Day defeat at Carlisle.

The boss, who abandoned the 5-3-2 formation and played 4-4-2 from the start yesterday, had demanded a quick and positive response, and got it in an entertaining game in which both sides had a goal disallowed and Scunthorpe rattled the woodwork.
