Match report: Huddersfield Town 1 - 0 Peterborough United
Feb 2 2009 by Dougie Thomson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
Town, with Pilkington on the left, Ainsworth on the right, and Danny Cadamarteri playing up front alongside Phil Jevons, had threatened in the ninth minute, when Collins latched onto a Jevons pass only for keeper Joe Lewis to block his shot.
Then Aaron Mclean’s high tackle on Robbie Williams brought a 19th-minute free-kick from 20 yards which Jevons put wide.
Pilkington left Whelpdale in his wake on the half hour, but his teasing cross was confidently collected by Lewis, while a minute later, the former Stockport man’s shot was blocked by Russell Martin.
But Town finally forced the goal they had been promising, with Collins making the most of good work by Jevons and Cadamarteri to dart into the box and slide a shot past Lewis.
It was no more than Clark’s side deserved, and hopes of a second goal were high when Ainsworth broke into the penalty box on 42 minutes, only to screw his shot off target.
Ferguson, having already been forced to bring on Shaun Batt for broken toe victim Craig Morgan in the 42nd minute, made another change at the interval, when Andrew Crofts took over from Dean Keates. And the reshuffle had its effect as Posh forced the pace in the second period.
Cadamarteri tested Lewis with a 50th-minute lob, but the majority of the action was at the other end.
First Boyd set up Batt, with Nathan Clarke doing just enough to force the Posh man to shoot wide, then Smithies reacted smartly to slide out and block from Craig Mackail-Smith in the 54th minute.
Town’s 18-year-old keeper was again in action in the 68th minute, making a fine fingertip save to frustrate Mclean, giving away a corner taken by Crofts from which Charlie Lee headed over.
