Posh seemed to have broken Town’s resistance after 70 minutes when Mclean threaded a pass towards the unmarked Mackail-Smith, who was chasing his 20th goal of the season, but Williams made a telling intervention.

Then Boyd broke through menacingly, only to shoot onto the roof of the net.

Boyd was again at the heart of a Posh attack in the 77th minute, driving in a low angled ball which just evaded Mclean and Mackail-Smith.

And Mclean stabbed a 77th-minute shot narrowly wide after Lee’s cross spilled from Smithies’ grasp.

“Credit Huddersfield, it’s a big result for them, but for us, it’s three points dropped,” said Ferguson.

“In tight affairs, the first goal does make a difference, and to be fair, we were lacklustre in the first half.

“Our energy levels looked low, and while we had the better chances in the second half, you can’t afford to be off the pace for 45 minutes of a match.”
