Simpson shot just wide as he tried to double his tally in the 26th minute while McCaffery powered a shot just over before Simpson was ruled offside when netting from a Roberts cross on the half hour.

Glennon saved well from Phillips while Nathan Clarke blocked Kris Gate’s shot as Town reached half-time ahead.

Michael Flynn, who was part of Town’s second-half line-up, came close with a left-foot volley in the 62nd minute.

But it was Gateshead who had the better chances, and as well as their two goals, Jones and Gate were both denied by Eastwood.
