And as debutant defender Peter Clarke pulled the strings for a side taken by assistant manager Terry McDermott (Lee Clark was at Gateshead), the best Wakefield could offer in response an 82nd-minute header by impressive centre-back Wes Milnes which went just wide.
The clearest-cut chances of the first half fell to Anthony Pilkington and new recruit Theo Robinson, who had efforts in the 39th and 40th minutes blocked.

Wakefield’s best first-half effort came from Chris Howarth, who held off Andy Butler’s challenge but shot into the side-netting while Shooter lifted his 27th-minute attempt from the edge of the penalty area too high.
