Youth FA Cup match report: Huddersfield Town 5 - 0 Atherstone Town
Dec 3 2009 by Peter Barrow, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
TOWN’S young guns cruised into the third round of the FA Youth Cup with an emphatic 5-0 win over Atherstone Town.
They booked an away trip to Premiership outfit Portsmouth – a match due to be played next week before the December 12 deadline for third round ties – with a composed performance in front of a crowd of 189 at the Galpharm Stadium.
The Town youngsters at times played some composed and attractive football with their third goal summing everything that was positive about a strong performance.
That strike arrived six minutes into the second half and killed off the hopes of their plucky opponents from the Midlands.
In an incisive move from halfway Matt Brooks split the Atherstone defence with a perfectly weighted pass, Michael McCaffrey controlled the ball smartly and played in striker James Spencer who produced a finish right out of the top drawer.
For Spencer it was his second goal of the night, having netted nine minutes before the interval, and he could easily have gone on to claim the matchball but for some sterling work by visiting keeper Alexander Armstrong.
Town were rarely on the back foot, despite the best endeavours of Atherstone’s Grant Roscorla who was the pick of the bunch for the visitors, and they took the lead on 17 minutes when Ryan Watson whipped in a corner from the left and his in-swinging effort ended up in the net courtesy of a deflection off a defender at the near post.
Having stamped their authority on the game it became a question of just how many Town could score as they controlled the second half.
McCaffrey was the player to make it four on 57 minutes when he finished smartly from some good build up work, and he finished off the scoring just before full-time when he flicked a free kick from Watson beyond the reach of Armstrong.
