FA Cup Match Report: Huddersfield Town 0 - 2 West Bromwich Albion
Jan 4 2010 by Dougie Thomson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
There had been a big let-off in the 14th minute when Dorrans, with Town appealing for offside, hooked Chilean full-back Gonzalo Jara’s cross over from close range.
And Portuguese winger Filipe Teixeira fired over from Cox’s neat chest-down before the former Swindon striker’s close-range effort was smothered by Smithies.
Slovakian defender Marek Cech shot against the outside of Smithies right-hand post five minutes after the restart, but it was Town who were no forcing the pace.
Antony Kay had already headed just off target, while Carson made a great block to deny Roberts at close quarters as the winger tried to convert Rhodes neat back-heel.
Then Collins, pushed further upfield after Tom Clarke’s introduction, twice came close.
First, on 63 minutes, he was narrowly wide after Roberts headed back an Anthony Pilkington cross.
Then, on 68, he brought a good save from Carson after cutting in and shooting right-footed.
Pilkington’s 72nd-minute cross was begging to be converted, but just evaded both Rhodes and Roberts.
Then Carson held Roberts’ low shot after Nathan Clarke’s long throw was only partially cleared.
Town had another penalty claimed waved away by Cambridgeshire referee Kevin Wright when Pilkington tumbled in the box.
And three minute later, it was the breakdown of another home attack which let in Roberto Di Matteo’s men for their breakthrough goal.
One soon became two, the clincher coming as Theo Robinson was preparing to come on to boost the fight for a leveller, and Kay’s late shot was the closest Town came to a response.
