GARY NAYSMITH’S sending off set the seal on a thoroughly frustrating afternoon for Town and their expectant fans.
The Scottish international left-back will be suspended for Saturday’s trip to Peterborough United after seeing red in the 86th minute.
Already cautioned for a 64th-minute foul on Joss Labadie, the former Sheffield United man must have known his home debut was to end early after bringing down substitute Kayleden Brown, the on-loan West Brom striker, as he broke on the counter-attack.
Sure enough Tyne and Wear whistler Geoff Eltringham produced yellow, then red, and Town were down to 10.
They still managed to force their best chance of the second period despite being low on numbers, with Theo Robinson looking set to clinch three points when he climbed to meet Anthony Pilkington’s cross a minute into time added on.
The substitute’s header, however, drifted harmlessly wide, and for stubborn Tranmere, it was job done.
At least Town collected a point, and the clean sheet which means they go to Peterborough aiming to start a season with four in a row for the first time in the club’s history.
Rovers might have snatched the win their shut-up-shop approach hardly merited when Ian Thomas-Moore ran onto on-loan Leeds right-back Liam Darville’s 77th-minute pass.
The striker who continues to be linked with Rotherham, the League II team managed by his dad Ronnie Moore, beat Alex Smithies with a low diagonal shot, but looked on in anguish as the ball went just wide of the keeper’s right-hand post.
Defeat would have been tough on Town, but despite dominating for long spells, they were unable to find the cutting edge which brought that impressive 3-0 opening-day win at Notts County.
