Bournemouth 1 - 1 Huddersfield Town: Examiner match report

GET set for a season-defining night of football drama at the Galpharm on Wednesday!

After three meetings and three draws, it’s a fight to the finish as these two go toe-to-toe for a trip to Old Trafford.

With no away goals rule in the play-offs, it’s effectively a cup final for a place in a cup final.

Some of the gloss was taken off another gritty Town performance by Donal McDermott’s equaliser down at Dean Court.

But while Bournemouth have shown themselves to be a good footballing side, Lee Clark’s team are surely in the driving seat.

They’ve held their semi-final foes on their own patch, making it 26 league games unbeaten, and haven’t lost at home in 14 matches.

They’ll have the backing of plentiful and passionate home support – and full marks to the 1,283 travelling fans in a 9,043 crowd who made themselves heard from start to finish down on the South coast on Saturday.

If it goes to extra time, they have the benefit of proven fitness levels and a strong bench, whoever is sitting on it.

And should penalties be needed, Ian Bennett has the psychological boost of having denied Danny Ings from the spot on Saturday.

His save came in the 36th minute, 14 after another thirtysomething, Kevin Kilbane, put Town ahead.

Bournemouth had started busily, with Liam Feeney showing his pace and outstanding skipper Peter Clarke responding with the first in a series of crucial tackles and headers.

Antony Kay, in for Jamie McCombe in a tactical switch at centre-back, also made a key intervention as McDermott, on loan from Manchester City, made a surging run from midfield.

Town had done little in terms of attacking up to that point, but made the most of a corner bizarrely given away by Anton Robinson from just inside his own half.

Gary Roberts swung in the flag kick from the Town right with precision and Kilbane met it with a glancing header beyond keeper Shwan Jalal and into the far corner.
