HUDDERSFIELD Town's promotion dream stayed very much alive as they won a penalty shoot-out on a nerve-shredding night of pure football drama.
Lee Clark’s side had missed their last three efforts from the spot in open play but made no mistake as a thrilling League I play-off semi-final second leg went all the way to a shoot-out.
Lee Novak, Danny Ward, Kevin Kilbane and Antony Kay all hit the target while star stopper Ian Bennett saved from Graham Feeney and Anton Robinson hit the bar as Town won with a penalty to spare.
A pulsating clash finished 3-3 and produced the fourth draw in four meetings between the two sides this season.
Town twice took the lead through Lee Peltier and Danny Ward, but both times Bournemouth levelled through Steve Lovell, his first a penalty.
Danny Ings headed the visitors in front for the first time in the two play-off ties 13 minutes into the first period of extra time, but Town’s response was swift, Antony Kay powering home another header during an additional minute at the end of the first period.
Peltier passed a fitness test on the hamstring injury which forced him off early in the second half of Saturday’s first leg – and lined up alongside Kilbane in central midfield, with Jack Hunt retaining the right-back berth.
Kay kept the centre-half slot alongside skipper Peter Clarke while top scorer Jordan Rhodes returned to the frontline alongside Benik Afobe as boss Lee Clark went 4-4-2.
Bournemouth, aiming for a first win over Town in 18 attempts, kept the same starting line-up as the first leg.
Clark had called for a high-tempo start to the tie, and his team took him at his word, with Gary Roberts having a shot saved after just 12 seconds.
The tricky winger was busy early on and cut into the box to have another effort blocked after three minutes.
Bournemouth’s first chance came in the eighth minute, when Ings dribbled along the edge of the area before shooting wide.
But Town were soon back on the attack, with Roberts getting into another good position for a curling shot which was only just off target.
Visiting right-back Adam Smith tried his luck from distance in the 17th minute, and wasn’t far off with a low angled shot across the face of goal.
Kay’s precise upfield pass helped bring Town the game’s first corner, won by Rhodes, in the 22nd minute, but keeper Shwan Jalal collected Roberts’ delivery at the second attempt.
