THE next Jon Steads, Andy Booths and Pawel Abbots are already learning their trade at Town.

Huddersfield Town boasts one of the most celebrated youth academies outside the Premiership - and lads from as young as eight are taught how to become the best.

But it is about a lot more than just the beautiful game.

At the academy, based at Leeds Road Playing Fields, staff look after the children from when they join until they pull on the blue and white stripes and stride out in the first team.

Academy director Gerry Murphy, 61, has been working with Huddersfield's brightest young soccer players for 16 years.

He said : "This is a learning environment, where we can nurture the children's natural abilities.

"It is all about teaching them football and the skills involved. We don't worry about winning too much until they have developed their skills," he added.

"Our coaches are aware of what the children need and they work hard to make sure the lads are looked after and constantly improving."

On the impressive indoor training pitch the players concentrate on ability on the ball rather than fitness.

The Under-nines coach, former Emley player Mick Reid, 45, of Almondbury, said the boys were full of energy anyway and it was best to focus on skill, rather than stamina.

"Fitness training comes later, when their bodies start to get a bit older," he said.

"Getting them together down here brings them on a lot, because they are up against excellent players all the time. It means they can improve and learn from each other."

Ex-Grimsby player Neil Matthews, 38, has been working with the tiny Terriers for two years.

He said: "We balance the more serious side with fun. The children love it because they get to play football against other lads who are as good as them. They learn about more than football though. We gives them confidence and something to focus on."
