The first, 35 seconds into stoppage time at the break, allowed Scott Dobie to steal in behind Andy Holdsworth and control on his chest as Paul Rachubka advanced from the line.
Rachubka did brilliantly to tip his first effort onto the bar, but there was nothing either he or Holdsworth could do as Dobie headed in the rebound.
While that hurt badly enough on the stroke of half time, Forest's winner left Town and their fans simply sickened.
Town had seemed comfortably capable of taking at least a point from the moment Danny Cullip carved substitute Danny Schofield to the ground in the 63rd minute and Pawel Abbott coolly slotted home the resulting penalty.
In fact, Forest were indebted to Danish goalkeeper Rune Pedersen for producing an incredible save to deny Town's best move of the match on 71 minutes and, arguably, what could have been a winning lead.
The chance came from a fantastic break down the right by Mirfin, who had switched to full-back in a 4-4-2 reshuffle, and his run took him right to the edge of the Forest box.
