Terriers tamed

VERSATILE footballer John Stone showed Town fans just what they were missing.

The centre-forward or centre-back had been a close-season target of Leeds Road chief Tom Johnston, who had previously been his manager at York.

But he instead plumped for a switch to Darlington, and scored as the Quakers tamed the Terriers 2-0 at Feethams, where 3,037 watched.

Colin Sinclair had already struck for the home side when Stone headed a second.

He then dropped back into defence to help ensure Town, whose most dangerous performer was Francis Firth, were held at bay in the Fourth Division fixture.

It was only a second win of the season for Peter Madden's Darlington, who were down in 16th place.

Town, who had only just missed out on promotion the previous season, were 11th after two wins (at home to Brentford and Southport), two draws and two losses.

In the League Cup, Town had overcome Hartlepool and Northampton to seal an attractive third-round trip to Chelsea.
