Gunning for Cup revenge

TOWN will be gunning for revenge when Grimsby visit in the FA Cup second round on Saturday week.

Alan Buckley’s League II strugglers, who beat Andy Ritchie’s men 4-1 in their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy first-round tie at Blundell Park earlier in the season, claimed another League I scalp by defeating current leaders Carlisle 1-0 in their FA Cup first-round replay.

Grimsby had come within five minutes of victory in the first match in Cumbria, which finished 1-1, and Gary Jones’ crisp 62nd-minute finish clinched last night’s triumph.

Ritchie’s assistant John Dungworth watched the tie.

It will be the third time the clubs have met in the FA Cup.

Grimsby were 1-0 first-round winners at Blundell Park back in 1974-75 while Town claimed a 3-0 third-round triumph at Leeds Road in 1989-90.

While Leeds suffered a shock exit at the hands of League II Hereford, who won 1-0 at Elland Road, Saturday’s Galpharm visitors Leyton Orient were frustrated by the late call-off of their replay at Bristol Rovers (waterlogged).

Rotherham were beaten 3-1 at home to Forest Green, but Barrow suffered a 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth after extra-time.

Meanwhile, Town keeper Alex Smithies played the first half as England Under 18s beat Ghana 2-0 in last night’s friendly at Gillingham.

Smithies will be on duty for Town in tonight’s FA Youth Cup second-round tie at Tranmere (preview Page 54).
