TOWN remained 14th in League I as Northampton, who could have leapfrogged them, were toppled 3-0 at Leeds.
Dennis Wise’s side bounced back from successive defeats by outclassing the defensively minded Cobblers.
Tore Andre Flo, making his first start for Leeds in almost a year, was foiled by Brett Johnson's goalline clearance.
But his side took the lead when defender Frazer Richardson cut in from the right on a long run before shooting home in the 43rd minute.
Fellow defender Rui Marques headed home in the 52nd minute and Curtis Weston shrugged off a challenge from Mark Hughes to get the third in injury time.
The match was watched by 24,472.
While Leeds are fourth, Carlisle went second by beating Port Vale 3-2 at Brunton Park.
The home side trailed to first-half goals by Halifax old boy Paul Harsley and Danny Whitaker.
But they hit back in the second through Luke Joyce and Simon Hackney, who netted twice in front of a 6,313 crowd.
