Town scoop League awards at double

TOWN have scooped two top prizes at the Football League Awards.

Not only have the Galpharm club been chosen as the League I Family Club of the Year, but Danny Broadbent is the division’s Young Apprentice of the Year.

Both accolades were achieved against strong competition at the Four Four Two-sponsored 2008 Football League Awards.

On the Family Club award, which is backed by Sports Alliance, ticket office manager Sue Beaumont praised the whole Town staff for their hard work and efficiency and highlighted the Fans of the Future scheme which helped land the top prize.

“It is a brilliant initiative, the junior supporters are the future of our game and this scheme has really helped bring in a lot of youngsters, girls, as well as boys,” said Sue.

“Our Sevens Scheme, where children get free shirts on their seventh birthday, has proved very popular and the whole scheme is snowballing through initiatives such as road shows in half-term holidays and local promotions.”

Teenager Broadbent, who received his award from Anne-Louise Holland, PR Manager for sponsors Nivea for Men, said he could hardly believe he’d taken the award.

"When I found out I was nominated I looked through the other nominees to see how many professional games they had all played because I have played only once and I didn't think I stood much of a chance in comparison,” said Danny, whose senior appearance was as a substitute at Tranmere in October.

“I found out only on the Friday before the match that I was selected in the squad and didn't really have time to think about it.

“It was great to play in my first game and you are only nervous about it until the moment you come on. At these awards, I have been very nervous and even now I still can’t yet believe it.

“I want to establish myself in the first team and play as high as I can.

“This award is a great reflection on the club and the youth development system that is in place and I’m very proud.”
