STAN TERNENT wasn’t slow to make a big pledge on his first day as Town’s new manager.

Hailing the club’s potential fanbase and the cut-price season-ticket offer, which he described as “fantastic”, Ternent added: “The best way to get people back is with a winning team, and believe me, that’s what you’ll get.”

As well as Bury, Ternent took Burnley, his first club as a player in the Sixties, into the Championship.

And he reckons Town have just as much potential.

“The two clubs are very similar – great tradition, great supporters and each have a great stadium,” he said.

“I just hope Huddersfield aren’t in as bad a state as Burnley were when I went there – that was a real jar of worms!

“To be serious, having spoken to the people running the club, I can see they have the ambition, desire and drive to go forward, and so have I.”

Asked if it had been a tough decision to give up his job as Paul Jewell’s right-hand man at Derby, who are expected to make a major push for promotion back to the Premier League after the disappointment of this season’s already-confirmed relegation, Ternent replied: “First and foremost, I’m a manager.

“I like to be in charge of my own destiny, and Derby have been fantastic about letting me take up this opportunity, for which I’m grateful.”
