Match report: Peterborough 4 - 0 Town

And Town also allowed Whelpdale far too much space from which to head home from Boyd’s 55th-minute cross to make it 3-0 and end any hopes of a fightback.
Given the final scoreline, it might sound strange to be talking in those terms, but Town did create chances.
They would have been ahead before Posh scored had Nathan Clarke managed to steer a low seventh-minute free-kick from Robbie Williams which cut straight through the home defence a couple of feet more to the left.
And they had a great chance to make it 1-1 in the 16th minute when Ian Craney sprung the offside trap and passed towards Gary Roberts, who was only denied by an excellent tackle from home skipper Martin.
Andy Holdsworth’s 17th-minute header had the home defence scrambling, while Roberts should have done better when he cut in to shoot after Williams, preferred at left-back to Joe Skarz, cut out a wayward throw from home keeper Joe Lewis after 22 minutes.
Williams sent a dipping effort just over a minute into the second half – it would have been interesting to see how Peterborough reacted to having their advantage halved – and Liam Dickinson had a 59th-minute header saved before a late Town flurry brought attempts at a consolation goal from Roberts, Dickinson and Phil Jevons.
