Whoever takes charge of the team, supporters will hope he can not only get the best out of the players already on the books, but that he can mould a squad to bring sustained success to the Galpharm over a much longer period than his predecessors.

Since Peter Jackson and Terry Yorath conjured the Great Escape just 10 years ago, Town have been managed by Steve Bruce, Lou Macari, Mick Wadsworth, Jackson again, Andy Ritchie and Ternent.

So this will be a seventh change in leadership in a 10-year spell and that doesn’t add up to a recipe for success.

Sixteen thousand season-ticket holders are desperate for success.
