Return of the Mac for Mirfin
Nov 15 2008 by Dougie Thomson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
MARTIN McINTOSH is looking forward to a reunion with former Town teammate David Mirfin when Alfreton Town head to Scunthorpe United in the second round of the FA Cup in a fortnight.
The Scottish centre-back headed home Alfreton’s first goal as they beat Suffolk side Bury Town 4-1 in the first round a week ago.
McIntosh, now 37, had feared he would have to hang up his boots because of a hamstring injury which limited him to just 11 appearances for Mansfield as the Stags slid out of the Football League last season.
But successful surgery has enabled him to continue playing in the Blue Square (Conference) North, with the East Midlands side in action at Solihull Moors this afternoon.
East Kilbride-born McIntosh, a Town player for two seasons before leaving for Field Mill in the summer of 2007, sees his long-term future in coaching, and is currently completing his UEFA A badge as well as working within Sheffield Wednesday’s youth system.
But he believes he can play on for another couple of seasons, with the trip to Scunthorpe an unexpected bonus.
