Steve Black: Big interview

IT’S BEEN a busy few months for Steve Black – but he wouldn’t have it any other way!

The genial Geordie and renowned sports fitness conditioner and psychologist is a week into his new job as Town’s performance coach, but just five minutes in his entertaining company reveals he is far more besides.

Black’s best known for being personal coach, mentor and mate of rugby ace Jonny Wilkinson.

The pair have just collaborated on a book ‘Tackling Life – Striving for Perfection’ in which the 2003 World Cup winner tells of transition from tortured soul to optimistic philosopher, and that despite suffering yet another nasty injury, a dislocated kneecap which has sidelined him since September.

Wilkinson famously landed the last-gasp drop goal which clinched victory over Australia in Sydney five years ago but admits: “My perspective on life robbed me of the ability to enjoy the moment.”

The mercurial fly half is also quick to hail Black’s influence on his career – and life.

“I trust him with everything. He’s the driving force behind my ambitions. Much of my confidence and self-belief comes from my respect and belief in him,” explains the 29-year-old Newcastle Falcons star.
