OUT-of-action Walsall sacked manager Jimmy Mullen on a day when Town’s was one of only three League I games to beat the big freeze.
The 12th-placed Saddlers acted after just four wins in their last 16 games. Coach John Schofield has been placed in temporary charge.
“The decision has been taken as a result of a sequence of disappointing results, particularly at home games,” said Walsall in a statement.
“It was necessary to take this decision in the best interests of the club.”
Leicester went five points clear at the top with a 3-0 home win over Leyton Orient.
Matt Oakley, Mark Davies and Paul Dickov, with a late penalty, got the goals.
Town target Danny Graham got his 14th goal of the season as Carlisle won 2-0 at Leeds.
Ex-Elland Road man Michael Bridges was also on the mark.
Leeds’ Luciano Becchio hit a post during the second half.
