Greats of football world at Greaves funeral

McGill said: “Ian was a huge influence on us all at Huddersfield – he was just the bee’s knees.

“He brought the good times back to the club and the town, and he was a brilliant manager to play under.

“He was a good coach and a man you respected but he knew about man-management as well.

“He’d take us off to Blackpool after games over in Lancashire and let us off the leash for a while, but we all knew there was a limit to what we could do. If we stepped out of line too far, we’d end up paying for it in training when we got back to Huddersfield!”

Smith echoed the sentiments of his former teammates and added: “He was a real football man, but it’s important to remember he was a great family man as well and someone who would always do his best to help you out.

“I sought his advice on many matters – not just football – and he was always a great help.”
