Huddersfield Town: midfielder Flynn determined to stick around

“Obviously things changed, and it’s hard not to wonder how many goals I might have got had I been playing regularly.

“But the fact is I haven’t, although the last couple of months have been much more encouraging, and I’m glad I’ve been able to win the gaffer round.

“It’s great to be involved again, because this is a great club, and one I very much want to play for. I’ll work hard every single day to be a part of things.

“I’ve got a year left on my current contract, and I certainly want to see it out, and who knows, if I do well enough, I could win an extension.

“The gaffer and I have talked often. He told me he was happy with my work ethic, but with me, that’s the absolute minimum you’ll get, and I believe I can offer a lot more on top.

“I think that everything you achieve in life comes through hard work, and I’ll continue to put it in whether I’m in the first team or not.”

Looking back to last week’s clash with Brighton, Flynn believes the 2-2 stalemate perfectly summed up Town’s season as a whole.

“We have underachieved, and it’s a game we should have won,” he said.

“Twice we put ourselves ahead with well-worked goals, but twice we conceded equalisers we shouldn’t have – and we all have to take responsibility for defending set-pieces.

“The gaffer hit the nail on the head when he said those kind of errors have cost us getting where we wanted to be.

“There are games we have drawn which we should have won, like Saturday’s, and games we’ve lost which we should have drawn.

“Had we gained just a few more points, we’d have been getting ready for the play-offs, and having to watch other teams do that is tough.”

Town’s supporters clearly share Flynn’s disappointment, so he was especially impressed by their reaction to last week’s post-match lap of the pitch.

“Their support all season has been first-rate, and the response we got after the game was outstanding,” he explained.

“I just turned round to Michael Collins and said ‘If it’s like this now, imagine what would happen if we were to win promotion!’

“It certainly whets the appetite, and those supporters deserve some reward.”
