Dean Hoyle rules out Kevin Phillips bid

DEAN HOYLE today denied rumours that Town have launched an audacious bid to bring Birmingham’s former England striker Kevin Phillips to the Galpharm.

Town’s incoming chairman said boss Lee Clark has identified a number of specific signing targets, including a frontman, but that Phillips is not among them.

The former Watford, Sunderland, Southampton, Aston Villa and West Brom player is 35 – the same age as retiring Town striker Andy Booth, who marked his final game by scoring his 150th goal for the club in Saturday’s season-closing 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient.

Clark hailed Booth’s achievement, and his run of five goals in his last four games, saying: “He’s a terrific professional and a terrific person and it’s been a pleasure to have been a small part of what has been a superb career.”

And the Galpharm manager, whose side finished ninth in League I, then failed to quash the rumours on Phillips.

“Kevin is an exceptional scorer who would still get goals at 40 or 45, and we’d love to have a Kevin Phillips at this club,” he said.
