Andy Booth column: Why I’m backing Scunthorpe United not Millwall and Hull City not Middlesbrough
May 22 2009 by Dougie Thomson, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
I’M FULLY behind the bid to bring the 2018 World Cup to England.
I wasn’t born when the 1966 tournament took place here, yet I still feel I know all about it, and that’s because it was such a massive event.
I was born for Euro 96 – in fact it’s imprinted in my mind because it was going on at the time I moved from Town to Sheffield Wednesday – and that was good, so having the World Cup would be even better.
Making the journey to Leyton Orient for our last game of the season, we saw the site of the 2012 Olympic stadium, and that whetted the appetite.
What a double it would be to get the Olympics and the World Cup.
We certainly have the stadia.
Wembley leads the way, but there are plenty others besides, and I know football fans here would get behind the tournament and turn out in numbers.
Yes, it’s an expensive exercise to stage a major event, but look at the money it would bring in and the prestige gained by successfully staging a tournament.
And in tough economic times such as these, the thought of having a World Cup on the doorstep would be something to savour!
