Man who made the switch on Holdsworth's Huddersfield Town to Leeds United speculation

Ellam, signed from Bradford City in 1966 and a league ever-present for three successive seasons up to his departure, expected to be plying his trade with Town in Division II (now Championship) in 1972-73.

But instead he was back on the big stage with Leeds, explaining: “The move came pretty much out of the blue.

“I wasn’t complaining, because at the age I was (29), I knew the chance to play in the First Division might not come again and Leeds were among the best clubs in the country.

“Although the arrival of Gordon McQueen meant I was pretty much a squad player, Leeds still won the league and reached the finals of both the FA and UEFA Cups in my time.

“Okay, I got some stick from the fans – and still do! – but while passionate, the vast majority are also reasonable.

“Andy Holdsworth has been a great servant for Town, and if he does join Leeds, then good luck to him.”
