“Playing them is certainly something I’m thinking about but once you get out there you have to remain professional and that’s what I will do.”
Clarke, who is out of contract at the end of the month, could also have moved to Charlton, but said Town ticked all the boxes for him.
“I’ve been made an offer I don’t think I can turn down, but although people will speculate, it’s not about the money,” he added.
“As well as being nearer home, the management and chairman are very ambitious and I was impressed by them. Hopefully we can achieve success together.”
Town chief executive Nigel Clibbens, just back from the Football League’s two-day annual meeting in Portugal, said: “The move is the perfect fit for both Peter and the club.
“Lee Clark has been tracking him for some time, and with just the formalities to be completed now, we’re delighted to have him on board.”
Clarke is Town’s second close-season signing after Tranmere midfielder Antony Kay.
