PETER CLARKE could make a quick return to Southend next season as Town captain.
The Galpharm side will open their League I campaign at Roots Hall – where the 27-year-old defender has just ended a three-season stint – on Saturday, August 8.
Manager Lee Clark, whose side’s first home league game is against relegated Southampton on Saturday, August 15, believes both games will be tough tests.
And he reckons the arrival of Clarke and fellow new boy Antony Kay, the former Tranmere midfielder, will help provide the character required to push for promotion.
Five different players – Chris Lucketti, Nathan Clarke, Jon Worthington, Andy Booth and Andy Holdsworth – wore the armband last season.
Clark has yet to decide who will have the honour in 2009-10, but confirmed that both Clarke and Kay are candidates.
“They are both strong players, physically and mentally, and those qualities were crucial to me when I made them signing targets,” he explained.
