Huddersfield Town new boy Clarke could be captain

“They have both skippered sides in the past, and I know both are keen to have the job at this club, which is good to hear.

“I won’t make any decisions on the captaincy until I see how each player shapes up in pre-season. But whoever gets the armband, I want the rest of the players to take responsibility as well, because you can’t have enough leaders. Players have to be able to take the initiative.”

While Southend, at 223 miles, represents one of a string of long-haul trips on the list, Clark is happy with the fixture.

“It will be great for Peter Clarke – let’s hope he walks into the right dressing room! – and great for us, because it’s a good test.”
