Huddersfield Town versus Newcastle United and Coventry City is top quality build-up

NIGEL CLIBBENS reckons Town’s pre-season clashes with leading Championship duo Newcastle and Coventry will provide the perfect tune-up for players, officials and fans.

The Galpharm games – Toon visit on Tuesday, July 21 (7.45) and the Sky Blues on the following Saturday, July 25 (3.00) – are the pick of the 11 friendlies fixed up by boss Lee Clark.

Coventry haven’t been to Huddersfield since winning 2-0 in the second round of the League Cup in August, 1977.

And Newcastle’s last visit was in May, 1984, when a team including current Town assistant manager Terry McDermott sealed promotion to the top flight with a 2-2 draw.

All Town’s management team, boss Lee Clark, McDermott, Derek Fazackerley, Steve Black and Paul Stephenson, are former Newcastle employees in one capacity or another.

Playing host to Toon will have special meaning for them – but chief executive Clibbens reckons there will be appeal for everyone.

"They’re attractive fixtures, and it’s great to be able to welcome two clubs of their stature to the Galpharm," he said.

"Newcastle, in particular, will bring a big following, and hopefully our fans will turn out in force for what will be very interesting games.
