Huddersfield Town's waiting game on Liverpool FC defender Kelly

Martin Kelly

Finnish ace Hyypia’s move to Bayer Leverkusen has left a gap which could be filled by a younger player, with 19-year-old Kelly and Spanish Under 21 player Mikel San Jose believed to be particularly highly thought of within Anfield.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, who has handed Kelly one first-team appearance – in last season’s Champions League tie at PSV Eindhoven – said: “We will see the young players in pre-season and we can work on different scenarios.

“We will see all of them and then decide. They are young players with a great future here. It depends on them and it depends on whether we can find someone in the market who can be good for us at the right price.”

Liverpool have seven friendlies lined up between July 15, when they visit Swiss side St Gallen, and August 8, when they host Atletico Madrid. The schedule includes a Far-East tour.
