LEE CLARK will “continue to monitor” the four trialists who featured in Town’s friendlies at Gateshead and Wakefield on Saturday.

Former Sheffield Wednesday defender Peter Gilbert, ex-Everton midfielder John-Paul Kissock and Dave Cyrus, Bradford Park Avenue’s Huddersfield-based frontman, played in the 2-2 draw in the North-East.

And Tom Harban, the former Barnsley full-back who most recently played for Halifax, was in action in the 1-0 win at Wakefield.

Former Wales Under 21 international Gilbert, 25, played in two Town reserve games towards the end of last season, and Clark explained: “It was hard to gain a true reflection of his ability, because they were end-of-season affairs in which a lot of the players involved were youngsters.

“We wanted to get him in again and have a closer look, and that will continue over the next few weeks. Peter has a good pedigree and plenty of experience.”

Sunderland-born, Gilbert began his career at Birmingham City before joining Plymouth in 2003. He made a £200,000 switch to Leicester in the summer of 2005 before rejoining his former Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock at Sheffield Wednesday in November of that year.

Appearances under current Hillsborough boss Brian Laws have been limited, but Gilbert, who had a loan spell at Doncaster in January 2007, can still boast a total of 138 games at club level.

Kissock, a quick-footed attacking midfielder, has had England call-ups at each age level from Under 19 to 19 as he came through the Everton youth system.

A regular in the Goodison reserves, he made the squad for a UEFA Cup tie against AZ Alkmaar in December 2007.

Kissock made 11 Scottish Premier League appearances during a loan spell at Gretna later that season, and last time around, played five times on loan at League II Accrington.

Cyrus, the son of former Huddersfield rugby league player Joe, broke into the Bradford PA first team towards the end of last season after impressing for both their Under 19 and reserve teams, both of whom won their respective league titles.

A former Newsome High pupil, he played in the same school side as Town left-back Joe Skarz and former striker Lucas Akins, who is now at Hamilton.

“He’s a local lad and one we want to take a look at,” explained Clark. “We go to Park Avenue in a friendly (a week tomorrow) and it will be interesting if he plays against us.”

Full-back Harban, 23, came through Barnsley’s youth ranks and had loan spells at Tamworth and Bradford City before joining Halifax when they were in the Blue Square Premier.
