Match report: Huddersfield Town 6 - 0 Wycombe Wanderers
Nov 16 2009 by Peter Barrow, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
Town’s goal-den wonders hit six again
Enter replacement Theo Robinson and it was to be a far from mundane half for the stand-in front-runner.
He had a hand in Town’s third as he collected the ball and shaped his pass neatly to Jordan Rhodes, who in turn picked out Pilkington as his best option and the move was finished in style with a rising bending shot into the top of the net.
Rather than Wanderers, Wycombe’s defence became wonderers as they started to ponder just where they were going to be breached next. On 64 minutes came the answer, skipper Clarke making the most of their disarray after his header from a corner was blocked on the line. He was then allowed to react to net the rebound.
And the bandwagon just kept rolling.
Fom another dangerous raid by Roberts his cross caused consternation as former Leeds and Chelsea defender Michael Duberry decided he had to get to the ball before Robinson, but in doing so he managed to guide it into his own net with keeper Young stranded.
Young, who was so perplexed by the lack of calm in front of him that he had earlier dropped the ball to Robinson and had to redeem himself with a brave save at the striker’s feet, was to be beaten again seven minutes from time.
The ever-willing Rhodes created the chance, Roberts raced onto his pass and into the penalty area only to be brought down and Robinson, as skipper Clarke generously passed up the chance for a hat trick, duly dispatched the penalty.
On top of all this Town were denied on at least two occasions by Young making point-blank saves and, when the keeper was beaten, Wycombe managed to get defenders back to clear at least three times.
It was a hatful of goals, but it could have been even more and Town are just buzzing on their own turf right now!
