Complacency not an issue insists Huddersfield Town’s Anthony Pilkington

ANTHONY PILKINGTON has no problem talking about earning promotion – but insists there’s no way he or any of his Town teammates will become complacent as they chase a place in the Championship.

Lee Clark’s in-form side, who are sixth in League I, head into their third home game on the trot against Hartlepool United tomorrow aiming to continue a sizzling Galpharm scoring streak of 20 in the last four games.

Pilkington, a League II promotion winner with former club Stockport County in 2007, was one of those on target in the 6-0 destruction of Wycombe Wanderers last time out, and would love to add to his five-goal tally for the season so far against ninth-placed Pools.

But the Blackburn-born wingman, who came across the Pennines during the January transfer window, says the most important thing is that somebody gets on the scoresheet, and that Town are winners for the fifth match in succession.

“We’re flying at the minute, and over the last couple of games (Dagenham and Redbridge were thumped 6-1 in the FA Cup first round the match before Wycombe) we’ve looked likely to score every time we go forward,” said the 21-year-old.

“It’s great to be a part of things, and when we play like this, we’re capable of beating any side in the division, but we have to avoid getting carried away and make sure we take it one match at a time.

“Promotion is very much the aim this time – we talked about it on the first day of pre-season training – and I’m convinced we’re good enough to challenge the likes of Leeds and Charlton for one of the two automatic places.

“But nothing has been achieved yet, and having started the season strongly, our form stalled, so it’s crucial we learn the lessons from that and ensure the same thing doesn’t happen again.”

Pilkington’s strike against Wycombe was his 26th career goal, and followed some intensive work on the training ground.

“I love scoring goals – who doesn’t? – and I’ve been working day in, day out on my finishing, so it was great to get some reward last Saturday,” he explained.

“But an even bigger part of my game is to set things up for the strikers, so it was good to be involved in that respect as well.
