Former Sunderland and Doncaster man Thornton responded by grabbing both goals.

“It was a great result and overall a great team performance but the three points was the most important thing,” said the 25-year-old Irishman.

“After losing at Oldham the previous Tuesday, the gaffer had a good chat with us and on Thursday and Friday, it was all about getting the team spirit and confidence back on in the training ground.

“We defended really well and created a lot of chances at the other end.

“While it took us a while to make the breakthrough, we kept at it and it paid off. The first goal gave a real confidence boost to the team.”

Williams, at the helm since February of last year, will give a fitness test to skipper and right-back Stephen Purches before tomorrow’s showdown.

The former West Ham and Bournemouth player was forced off against Walsall by a calf injury, his place going to Andrew Cave-Brown.
