JAMES BERRETT is being tracked by Tranmere Rovers.

As Town agreed settlement of striker Tom Denton’s contract, their npower League I rivals from Birkenhead are reported to be keen on transfer-listed 21-year-old midfielder Berrett.

And if a deal is done, the Golcar-based player could make a quick Galpharm return, with Les Parry’s side Town’s first visitors of the season on Saturday, August 14.

Capped by the Republic of Ireland at Under 18, 19 and 21 level, Berrett is contracted until 2012.

But he managed only three starts and nine appearances off the bench last season, taking his overall tally to 24 starts and 17 substitute outings, and was made available for transfer by boss Lee Clark at the end of the campaign.

It’s believed talks have taken place between Tranmere and the player.

Berrett’s fellow midfielder Michael Collins is a target of Scunthorpe United while left-back Joe Skarz continues to be linked with Shrewsbury Town, where he was on loan last season.

Denton, 20, was signed by Stan Ternent in August 2008 after shining for Wakefield FC, but has been unable to break into the first-team frame. His contract ran until next summer.
