TERRY McDERMOTT says every player in Huddersfield Town’s senior squad is playing a vital role in this season’s success – not just those on the pitch.
Few people in the English game have the 59-year-old’s experience in domestic, European and international football and he knows all the elements which go into making a successful club.
One of those is a quality squad – but McDermott explains it’s not just about ability, it’s also about attitude.
“You can tell how strong our squad is when you look at the quality of people who can’t even get onto the bench – the likes of Gary Naysmith, Donal McDermott and Jamie McCombe from last week’s travelling party,” said McDermott, manager Lee Clark’s trusted assistant.
“I think it’s wrong the Football League clubs have made the decision to go to only five players on the bench – it’s criminal, really – but we have to abide by those rules.
“The players who don’t play are obviously upset and I don’t blame them, because I’d be like that as well, but they will all play a big part in helping us try to win promotion this season.
“It’s a long, long season. There are another 30 games left and I’ve told all the players, even those not getting in at the moment, that they have a big part to play.
“It would be easy for them to go moping around the club and then that transfers to the players who are involved and it affects them.
“The lads outside the teamsheet have been magnificent in not letting that happen and I’ve assured them all they will be playing a lot of games before the season is out.”
McDermott was pleased, in a strange sort of way, that Town were made to fight for the 1-0 win at Yeovil – because it illustrated the resolve of the players.
“We had to work hard, but it doesn’t matter which club you play for the bare minimum you’ve got to give is effort – because then everything else takes care of itself,” he said.
