DON’T compare any new signings we make with Jordan Rhodes!
That was the plea from manager Simon Grayson to the Town fans as he looks to build on an encouraging start to the Championship season.
Grayson admits it’s inevitable people will used Rhodes as a reference point whenever a chance is missed, but he doesn’t want any new arrivals – or the new-look squad which is already impressing – to be weighed down by the past.
“It’s only natural that people will compare the player who has left with any new one, but if I manage to get in the level of player I’m looking at, then hopefully people will realise Jordan Rhodes is a thing of the past and we move forward,” he said.
“I would ask the fans to appreciate and be patient with whoever comes in, because it will be a new era for him, or the two or three we get, and they will need time to settle in as well.”
Grayson added: “I was aware of the agreement the club had with Jordan about his future when I took over at the club in February – and it was clear the club had turned down a significant bid for him (from West Ham).
“These things have to happen sometimes because every player in the country and every player in the world has a valuation.
“If someone wants to meet that valuation and the player wants to move then there is very little you can do about it.
“Do I think it’s the right move for Jordan? I’m not quite sure; only he can make that decision.
“He expressed his desire to speak to Blackburn and all I can do is thank him for everything he has done – and we move on.
“We have progressed the club immensely over the last few years and Jordan has played a significant part in that, but one player doesn’t make a football club and, hopefully, over the next few days, weeks, months and years we will show our intentions and ambitions for where this club is going to be.”
