POLICE have switched Huddersfield Town’s home clash with Leeds United back to a Saturday lunchtime kick-off because of crowd safety fears.

The Championship fixture was wanted by Sky TV for live Friday-night screening, but West Yorkshire Police say it must now kick off at 12.30pm on Saturday, December 1.

That was the original date for the derby, and the Police move has been prompted because of crowd trouble when Leeds United played Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough eight days ago.

Several Leeds fans ran on the pitch and one attacked Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

Town will lose £80,000 of Sky TV revenue but could still face an extra security bill of around £25,000.

Town chief executive Nigel Clibbens said: “Obviously the safety of supporters is paramount to Huddersfield Town and we have to be led by the decision of West Yorkshire Police on this matter.

“It was clear there would be serious ramifications arising from the disorder (at Hillsborough) so this does not come as a surprise.

“Unfortunately his actions have now affected the wider game and our club. The game will no longer be televised by Sky TV and that will cost the club £80,000.
