HUDDERSFIELD Town are set to come up against Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong after his loan switch to Saturday’s hosts Charlton, and now they could face Stewart Downing at Middlesbrough next Tuesday.
It’s reported the Liverpool winger (right) would consider a return to his first club to play a part in their Championship promotion push.
According to sources, Downing, who has had few first-team opportunities under Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, would not be averse to a loan move back to the Riverside Stadium as he looks for regular football.
Liverpool seem likely to attempt to offload the 28-year-old, who joined in a £20m switch from Aston Villa in July last year, this January, with Rodgers keen to address his lack of strikepower.
There is interest from a series of Premier League rivals, but Downing is said to still be determined to prove he has a long-term future on Merseyside.
In the circumstances, the England player would prefer a temporary move, and with tomorrow’s Football League loan deadline looming, Boro would provide a tempting chance.
Boss Tony Mowbray, whose side are third in the Championship, has refused to comment.
Downing emerged at Boro before a £12m transfer to Aston Villa in July 2009.
