ALEX SMITHIES goes into derby action for Huddersfield Town against Leeds United today revealing how it took him just 10 seconds to reject the Elland Road club’s bid to sign him up.

The 22-year-old former England age group international was courted by a string of clubs before committing himself to Town’s academy.

“Leeds were an option, but they weren’t an option if you know what I mean,” smiled Smithies ahead of the all-ticket clash.

“I’m from Huddersfield and grew up supporting Town, and all my friends and family are big supporters of the club.

“There were a number of possibilities when it came to signing for a club, but I remember Gerry Murphy, the academy director at the time, telling me Town would give me my chance.

“That’s how it has worked out and I’m really enjoying the challenge of being up in the Championship.

“Games like today’s are a big part of why we worked so hard to win promotion from League I, and I can’t wait for the match.”

Clashes with Leeds have provided some of the highs and lows of the former Colne Valley High School pupil’s career.

Smithies will play his 148th Town game today, five years after making his full debut in a 4-0 League I loss at Elland Road.

“I was only 17 and in the side because Matt Glennon was suspended. It was tough but it gave me a taste for big-match football,” he explained.

“It also showed me the standard I needed to get towards to become a professional, and I started working really hard.

“I well remember the season after (2008-09), when we beat Leeds at our place and I kept a clean sheet, and it’s still among my best moments so far.”
