SIMON GRAYSON says he’s confident referee Mick Russell will be dealt with “in the right manner” after his “major mistake” in Huddersfield Town’s feisty derby showdown with Sheffield Wednesday.

The experienced Hertfordshire official has questions to answer after showing two yellow cards to Owls winger Jeremy Helan in the first half of the goalless draw at the John Smith’s Stadium – but failing to send him off.

Russell, a Football League referee since 2004 who was taking charge of his 28th game this season, cautioned the on-loan Manchester City man after judging he had dived under a challenge from Jack Hunt in a bid to win a penalty in the ninth minute.

He then yellow carded the Frenchman again when he brought down Adam Hammill in the 25th minute – and despite protests from Town’s players, management and fans, restarted play with Helan still on the pitch.

“As we came off the pitch at half-time he apologised for the error,” said Grayson.

“I think he’s probably written the wrong number (Michail Antonio’s 7) down in his book, which is staggering.

“At the time of the second yellow card, the fourth official (Duncan Street) was adamant it was the No7 who had been booked already, but it was clearly Helan.

“The referees’ assistants (Paul Kettlewell and Wayne Grunnill) could have helped him out, and between the four of them, they’ve made a major ricket.

“I was immediately aware of what had happened and most of my players were too.

“The assessor was also here, and I think David Allison, who is in charge of the referees’ board, will know all about it.

“It will up to the refereeing authorities to decide what kind of punishment he gets and I’m sure they will deal with it in the right manner.”

Grayson added: “The referee hasn’t done it deliberately, but you can’t make major mistakes like that.

“Perhaps they should be able to come out an explain decisions after every game.

“I’m not going to say Wednesday going down to 10 men would have guaranteed us winning the game, but it would have certainly helped us and what if Helan had gone on to score or create the winning goal?

“It would have been a massive talking point, but then it is already.”
