HUDDERSFIELD Town’s “pretty gutless” performance at Watford on Saturday finished off boss Simon Grayson.
That’s the view of Steve King, chairman of the Huddersfield Town Supporters’ Association.
King said: “I think a lot of Town fans saw what was coming, if not the timing of it.
“I didn’t go to Watford myself but it was a pretty gutless performance by all accounts.
“The players have to take some responsibility but the manager has to motivate and inspire them.”
King added: “We just felt we needed another four wins to see us safe but as the weeks went by we just slipped further and further down.”
“Simon Grayson did a fantastic job in getting us promoted and we will always be grateful for that.
“We started the season better than anyone could have hoped for but for whatever reason it’s just tapered off.”

King declined to say who he wanted to take over but knew who he didn’t want – likely favourite Nigel Adkins, the former Southampton boss.
“I will put my trust in Dean Hoyle,” said King. “I want anybody who will keep us up, just not Nigel Adkins.”

Another prominent Town fan, Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney, took the opposite view.
“Nigel Adkins is the only man for me,” he said.
“He has recent experience in getting Southampton up and I wonder if he still has local links having been manager at Scunthorpe.
“I spoke to him at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards. I’ve followed his career and told him I thought he had done a really good job.”
McCartney said staying up was all that mattered.
“We have got to stay in this division. I love playing Leeds, Hull and Sheffield Wednesday.
“We don’t want to go to places like Leyton Orient, Exeter and Yeovil.”
