HUDDERSFIELD TOWN will take their first steps in next season’s Capital One Cup during the week following the Football League’s opening games on Saturday, August 3.

It’s a change from last season, when first-round League Cup ties took place before the regular campaign started, with Town beaten 2-0 at Preston .

While the draw dates have yet to be confirmed, organisers have fixed each round of the competition, with Premier League sides exempt until the second and those qualifying for a European competition until the third.

The first round takes place in the week commencing August 5, the second w/c August 26, the third w/c September 23, the fourth w/c October 28 and the quarter-finals w/c December 16.

The semi-final first legs are w/c January 6, the second legs w/c January 20 and the final at Wembley, which this season featured Bradford, on Sunday March 2. Town, whose manager Mark Robins was a League Cup winner with Leicester in 1997, haven’t got past the second round since 2003-04, when they beat Derby and Sunderland before losing 1-0 at Reading in the third.

Reading, of course, will be among their Championship opponents next season after their relegation from the Premier League.

Brentford and Yeovil contest a second-tier spot when they meet in the League I play-off final at Wembley tomorrow (1.30). Today it’s the turn of Bradford and Northampton in the League II showdown.

The Championship play-off final between Crystal Palace and Watford takes place on Monday week, May 27.

Next season’s fixtures are released on Wednesday, June 19 with Town returning for pre-season training on Thursday, June 27.

The campaign starts earlier than last year after clubs voted for more Saturday and less midweek fixtures.
