Body found in river between Cooper Bridge and Mirfield

Police investigating after grim discovery by member of public this afternoon

A body has been found in the river near Huddersfield.

The grim discovery at Mirfield was made by a member of the public at 3pm today.

Police have taped off an area of river bank and woodland around the river by the John Cotton’s mattress factory on Huddersfield Road.

Detectives and forensic officers are searching the area and a white tent has been erected on a car park, adjacent to the Battyeford playing fields.

Police have been not yet said if they consider the circumstances to be suspicious.

At this time they are unable to release any details of the body as the next of kin have not been found.

The incident is third body find on that stretch of waterway in just a few weeks.

A 77-year-old man fell into the Calder and Hebble Navigation on Wednesday.

He sadly died in hospital later in the day.

A body was also found close the river just a mile downstream at Ravensthorpe on March 14. The person is yet to be identified.
