Fifth of police calls are "non-police matters"

West Yorkshire Police invited the media to visit their call centre yesterday, where handlers take 999 and 101 calls.

The force have revealed that a fifth of calls made to them are in regards to matters they are unable to deal with.

Some are better suited to local councils and social services, particularly following council cutbacks.

Police have seen a big rise in calls over the past month: August saw an additional 1,000 emergency calls a day compared to the same month last year.

GPs' drugs pilot project

GPs at Colne Valley Group Practice in Marsden are among some of the first in the county to trial a new drugs project.

The pilot NHS scheme is focused on reducing unnecessary administering of antibiotics.

They will be involved in the testing of a new machine which measures protein levels in the blood, which will determine whether or not they will benefit from the anti-bacterial drugs.
